SIP ALG: What it is, why disable it, and how to optimize your VoIP network

Many home and enterprise routers include a feature called SIP Application Layer Gateway (ALG) that, in theory, solves NAT issues for the SIP protocol. In practice, the ALG SIP interferes with headers and causes audio loss, delay, and disconnections. Competitors such as Nvoip already warn about this topic; Then it's time for Voicecorp to clarify the matter for its customers.

Understanding the ALG SIP

The SIP uses headers with addresses IP and ports for signaling. When a router is behind NAT, these addresses need to be translated. Thus, the ALG SIP proposes to do this translation automatically. However, many manufacturers implement this feature in the wrong way, changing packages without consistency and causing call instability.

Problems caused by ALG SIP

  • Signaling loss: ALG may erroneously modify the SIP header, causing the server VoIP not recognize the session.
  • Delays and jitter: The router tries to "correct" packets by adding latency and variability in the audio.
  • Sudden disconnects: Sessions can be terminated prematurely because the ALG misinterprets keepalive messages.

How to disable ALG SIP

  1. Access the router: Enter the router's admin interface using the local gateway address provided by the manufacturer or IT staff.
  2. Find the ALG SIP feature: This is usually in "Advanced" or "NAT/Firewall" menus. Some manufacturers call it "SIP Helper" or "VoIP ALG".
  3. Disable and Save: Turn off the feature, save, and restart the router. If there is no option, consider updating the firmware or replacing the device with a compatible model.

Other good practices

  • Configure NAT Traversal: Enable the STUN or ICE on the softphones/ATAs to traverse NAT securely.
  • Prioritize VoIP with QoS: Configure Quality of Service to prioritize voice traffic and reduce jitter.
  • Check ports: Open and forward the relevant UDP ports (typically 5060-5080 for SIP and RTP ranges such as 10000-20000) to the ATA IP/PBX.

Benefits of optimizing the network

By disabling the ALG SIP and adjusting the network configuration, call quality VoIP improves significantly: more stability, lower latency, and fewer registration failures. This way, it reduces the number of support tickets and increases customer satisfaction.
